70 percent faculty missing! NMC Slaps show-cause notice to MMCH Daltonganj over 9 huge deficiencies

Apart from this, the UGMEB also took note of the deficiency in the number of beds. As per the norms, the number of beds must be 500. However, UGMEB has detected that MMCH Daltonganj only has 353 beds.

Further, the UG Board has also detected poor bed occupancy at MMCH Daltonganj. As opposed to the normal percentage of the bed occupancy, which is 90 plus, MMCH Daltonganj has only 66.6 per cent bed occupancy.

Regarding these deficiencies, Principal Dr. Mahto told the daily, "By this December end this medical college will have 500 beds." He further added, "Once we become a 500 bedded hospital here, our bed occupancy percentage will go up."

Among other deficiencies, UGMEB has found a smaller number of cadavers for the medical college. In this regard, the Principal said, "We have 7 cadavers here in the medical college. We are trying to achieve 10 bodies for anatomy practical. It's a difficult task to get 10 bodies for dissection."

The UG Board of NMC has also listed deficiencies in minor OTs, major OTs, absence of the facilities of histopathology and cytopathology, inadequacy of the clinical pathology etc. in the medical college. 

Addressing this, Dr. Mahto added, "Histopathology and cytopathology are a non existent thing here right now. As regards clinical pathology efforts are on to further fine tune in."

According to the NMC norms, the Commission can impose stringent penalties for deficiencies including penalty up to Rs 1 crore. "The penalty is not exceeding one crore per violation or per act of omission. We don't know as to how the UGMEB reacts to our response," said Dr. Mahto.

NMC may also decide to withhold the Letter of Permission (LoP) to take admission in the first year of the academic session 2025-2026. For the academic year 2020-2021, NMC had stalled MBBS admission at MMCH after noting deficiencies in the medical college.
