Anti-ragging committee of BJ Medical College probes complaint against three senior resident doctors

Ahmedabad: Following complaints from seven junior resident doctors of the B.J. Medical college in Ahmedabad about the inhumane ragging they have suffered for several months by the seniors, The anti-ragging committee of the college has started an investigation into the complaint.

The Medical college's director of PG Diploma Courses and Research Dr. Meenakshi Parikh told the media persons on Wednesday that the anti-ragging committee has received complaints forwarded by the Orthopedic department's head.

In the said complaint, the junior resident doctors of the orthopedic wing have complained that their seniors were harassing, mentally torturing and beating them, with shoes, belt, rubber bands, forcing them to do sit-ups, and they are even slapped.

The anti-ragging committee consisting of 18 members questioned 50 students of the orthopaedic branch in a meeting regarding the allegations made by the junior students agaisnt three senior students.

The Director said, "In the complaint junior doctors have not made it clear when and where this has happened, but it seems it is likely to be happening in the hostel, Operation theatre, in the Orthopedic wing over a period of time."

It also came to the fore through a letter written by the victims that one of them had been seriously injured in the ear as result of the inhumane ragging that took place at the college campus. 

Dr. Parikh said in the afternoon the anti-ragging committee meeting has been summoned, and junior doctors, witnesses and senior doctors against whom the complaint has been made will be called for to record their statements. "If substance is found in the allegations, stern action will be taken against senior resident doctors," he said.

According to TOI sources, the committee first heard the students who had complained, then the three accused students and then talked to about 50 other students to substantiate the complaint of ragging.

When asked about the reason for not informing the authorities earlier when the ragging took place, the students said that if they informed the teachers, the seniors would torture them even more. Afraid of further consequences, they kept their mouth shut. 

"Responsible doctors can be suspended from the college for some time, or their admission can be terminated," said the director.

However, the accused students have denied the allegations at the meeting.

After discovering that the allegations were valid, the committee recorded the substantial proofs and is ready to send the report to to the University Grants Commission and also to the National Medical Commission. Action will be taken against the accused if found guilty.
