BJ Medical College, others revert to online classes after 4 MBBS students test COVID positive

Ahemdabad: In order to ensure the safety of medical students against Covid-19, BJ Medical College has decided to conduct online classes instead of on-campus classes for 1st-year MBBS students.

The decision came after four first-year MBBS students of the college were tested positive for covid-19. Some of the other medical colleges of the state also decided to follow BJ Medical College's decision to call off on-campus classes and hold online classes instead.

As per a recent media report by Times of India, the other medical colleges in Ahemdabad that decided to close down their on-campus classes include NHL Municipal Medical College, LG Medical College, and AMC Dental College. Besides, the medical college in Saurashtra has also decided to call off the on-campus classes for its medicos.

One of the senior college officials confirmed that that four first-year students had been infected with Covid-19 and stated, "The medical college authorities have decided to go back to online studies from Monday for first-year students as a precautionary measure."

One of the first-year MBBS students told the daily that despite the central government's all-India vaccination drive for healthcare workers, many of the healthcare workers are yet to receive covid-19 vaccines. The college authorities decided to close down the campus after the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporations took cognizance of the increasing number of COVID cases in the city and ordered that all the shops of the state will remain shut after 10 p.m. in 8 municipal wards of the capital city.

After remaining shut for over nine months on the pretext of the coronavirus pandemic, the colleges and schools in the state started reopening partially from the second week of January. However, under the current circumstances, after the four students got infected with COVID in the state, the college authorities have given more importance to the safety measures and cancelled on-campus classes taking precaution against the pandemic. Further, several medical colleges again preferred to switch back to online classes.

According to TOI, almost 890 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in Gujarat on Monday. Surat had been reported with 262 cases, followed by Ahmedabad with a total of 209 cases. The state's only fatality was also reported from Surat. The total tally of coronavirus cases in Gujarat now stands at 2,79,097.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the medicos residing on the college campus had expressed their concerns over safety as they could not take bath during the pandemic. The distressed doctors and medicos residing at the PG hostel of BJ Medical College were facing tremendous problems as they had no water supply for the last five consecutive days. The agitated hostellers stated that due to the unavailability of water they had to leave for work without even taking a bath which is extremely necessary during the pandemic.
