Patna: Chaos broke out at Government Medical College and Hospital, GMCH Purnia, when security guards alleged that medical students had assaulted them, accusing a security guard of allegedly behaving obscenely with a female student. 22 guards were reportedly injured.

According to the security guards, around 200 medical students attacked them using sticks, belts, bats, rods and lathis. The guards claimed the students entered the old OPD campus late at night and assaulted them while they were asleep.

On the other hand, the students explained they thrashed the guards after a complaint was raised about a guard’s alleged misbehaviour towards a female student. They claimed that the incident was recorded on mobile phones.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night, after the guards had completed their duty and gone to rest inside the old OPD building. They alleged that a large group of students had barged into the premises and launched a sudden attack.

"The attackers carried sticks, belts, bats, rods and lathis, and beat the guards severely, leaving several bleeding," alleged an injured guard.

Police later reached the campus and brought the situation under control.

After the incident, the security guards went on strike on Wednesday morning, refusing to work and demanding strict action against those involved and better security arrangements at GMCH. They said they would not return to duty until action was taken. The guards also alleged that such incidents happen frequently and the administration has failed to stop violence on the campus.

Speaking to TOI, a female guard said, "Guards often face conflict when they try to stop students from leaving hostels at night to meet friends. If male guards can be attacked, female guards could be targeted next." She also questioned the allegation, suggesting it could be a conspiracy and claiming that the video may not conclusively identify the guard involved.

The security guards filed a complaint against the students at the police station, and further investigation is underway.

Phanishwarnath Renu ToP (police outpost) in charge Raj Nandni said, "Police are aware of a video allegedly showing obscene behaviour, and the matter is under investigation."
