CMC Vellore Ragging case: Madras High Court stops suo-motu proceedings

Chennai: After receiving a satisfactory status report from the  Christian Medical College authorities, the Madras High Court on Tuesday closed the proceedings related to the ragging incident at the  Medical College in Vellore. 

The college management submitted a status report explaining the steps taken by the college authorities and the court found that appropriate actions have been taken by the college management. The management has already suspended 10 students who were found to be involved in ragging after an initial investigation.

The college informed the court that the principal had scheduled a meeting with the wardens and the men's hostel's governing board. Additionally, he had told the anti-ragging committee to look into the situation. A Specific Inquiry Committee (SIC) made up of five renowned professors was established to investigate the case. Some students were suspended after the SIC discovered that they were ragging their juniors, reports Live Law.

The counsel also assured the court that they will not tolerate ragging on campus and will take frequent actions if anyone is found guilty of ragging others. The counsel for the college also informed the court that CCTV cameras has been installed around the campus and the authorities have already detected and suspended ten students in connection with the incident.

Moreover, full time wardens have already been employed and security personals are appointed to take rounds of the college all the time to prevent any such incidence in the future. The anti-inning committee will be taking action and inspecting the college on daily basis and they will also give details and record the time of their inspection.

Other than the anti-ragging committee, an external monitoring committee will be set up comprising members from outside the college. This, the council pointed out that the college has taken every kind of preventive measures so that this kind of incident do not take place inside the institution again in the future. "We have already suspended 10 students. Now there is a fear of god in the minds of the students. Let this not be a blot on the institution," the counsel submitted.

Medical Dialogues previously reported that the administration of CMC Vellore had suspended seven senior MBBS students of the institute. This decision was taken by the college authorities on the basis of a preliminary inquiry conducted by a committee after receiving an anonymous complaint. Taking suo motu cognizance of the instances of MBBS ragging at Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, the Madras High Court then directed the institute to submit an action taken report from the college management.
