Puddukottai: A convict ward has opened in the town of Puddukottai in Tamil Nadu, to provide treatment to adolescent offenders who require hospitalization.

The new convict ward is associated with the Pudukottai Medical College Hospital, a government run institute and will provide treatment to inmates of Borstal School, who require medical attention. Borstal school houses adolescent offenders between the ages 18-21 years and is also located in Puddukottai.

The ward was inaugurated by Minister for Law, S. Regupathy in the presence of Collector Kavitha Ramu, Hospital Dean M. Poovathi and a few other officials on November 25th, 2021.

According to press reports, the convict ward is equipped with the necessary facilities to provide quality treatment to inmates. In a brief interaction with reporters from the Hindu, Mr. Regupathy said the convict ward had been opened keeping in mind the welfare of the prisoners. The ward has separate rooms for police personnel deployed to guard the inmates admitted to the ward. The Minister has assured the public that COVID-19 vaccines has been administered to all staff serving in jails across the State. Furthermore, COVID-19 tests are being conducted on all accused persons before they are lodged in the jail, he added.

This is a commendable development as a medical ward for convicts will cater to any treatment needs that they may have, ensuring holistic rehabilitation, which is especially necessary as these convicts are all adolescents.
