Vijayawada: In an unfortunate incident, a fourth year MBBS student of NRI Medical College ended his life at his home on Monday night. In June this year, the student had moved the Dr YSR University of Health Sciences alleging harassment by the college principal regarding a delay in fees payment.

The shocking incident came to light on Tuesday morning when the housemaid came to clean the student's room, however, the door was locked from inside. After several failed attempts to wake him up, the maid called the student's grandparents.

With the help of a spare key, the grandparents opened the door and found his lifeless body hanging from the ceiling fan. It has emerged that while his parents were in the US, the student lived with his grandparents, reports DC

Later, the police were contacted and a preliminary investigation was conducted upon their arrival.

While investigating his room, the police found letters written by the student to the college authorities requesting them not to take any action against him regarding a delay in fee payment.

According to the police, the student committed suicide due to the pressure of paying the extra fees demanded by the college even though he had already paid the prescribed fees for his course.

Less than two months ago, the student wrote a letter to the authorities of YSR University of Health Sciences and NRI College in Vijayawada regarding the harassment of payment of extra fees from the management, but there was no response.

In the letter, the student who joined the management quota to study medicine in an NRI college in 2019, has been paying a pre-determined fee of Rs 33 lakh every year within the stipulated time. The letter states that the fee of Rs 33 lakh for this year was paid on April 12. But he mentioned in the letter that the college authorities forced him to pay another 12 lakhs. He reportedly expressed hopelessness that he would not be able to pay that amount, so he informed the principal.

He wrote that the principal told him to talk to the college administrator about the fee, and at the same time, the principal took action against him on the administrator's orders.

In his letter, the student requested the YSR University of Health Sciences to take strict action against the NRI college management who are threatening to take strict action against him and are harassing him mentally by not allowing him to study diligently and causing irreparable damage to his future.

A copy of this letter was sent to the YSR University of Health Sciences along with the college administrator and principal on June 23 this year.

A suicide case has been registered by the Patamata police and an investigation is underway.
