Mumbai: In an unfortunate incident, a first-year medical student at Grant Government Medical College and Sir JJ Group of Hospitals allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling in his room due to alleged academic pressure.

Preliminary findings suggest that the student was depressed for the past few days after scoring low marks in his exams, which were held recently. He reportedly scored less than 50% marks and was anxious about appearing for supplementary papers.

According to the police, he had not even gone to his native place in Shirdi in Ahilyanagar district during the Diwali vacation as he wanted to study, a police officer told Hindustan Times.

“The student did not leave his hostel room throughout the day on Monday. He did not appear for a paper scheduled during the day as well,” the officer from JJ Marg police station said.

As per the Free Press Journal news report, the incident took place on Monday at around 8pm when the 21-year-old student did not step out of his room for a long time. His friends worried about him and went to his room to check on him, but found the door locked from the inside. Despite multiple persistent knockings and calling, he did not respond. Following this, they peeped through the window and found him hanging.

The student was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Subsequently, the college authorities informed the police, who registered a case of accidental death following preliminary investigation.

While the police suspect that academic pressure might have driven him to take the extreme step, an investigation is currently underway to confirm the exact reason behind his suicide.

The college authorities have informed the student's family about his death, reports HT.
