HANAMKONDA: The house surgeons of the Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) 2016 batch have threatened to boycott duties if the doctors are forced to vacate their hostels.
This comes as in order to accommodate the increasing number of Coronavirus cases, the health authorities are proposing to convert the hostel of medical college house surgeons into a Covid Isolation Centre.
There are almost 83 interns residing in the hostel of the college currently.
Deccan Chronicle reports that the interns residing in the hostel have been asked to shift to an alternate building. However, they have complained that the accommodation is cramped and a maximum of 50 of them can reside there but not all 84.
As per a recent media report, the interns mentioned in a statement, "The alternate place suggested is unhygienic and poorly ventilated. How can we adjust in these rooms even while putting in hard work as house surgeons at the MGM Hospital."
The interns asked why their hostel must be sacrificed and suggested that the authorities could instead convert into Covid Isolation Centre alternate buildings. They even suggested places like UG girls, UG boys, or Lakkireddy block which could be used for the same purpose. Moreover, they pointed out, as currently holidays have been declared for juniors, the place where juniors stay can also be used. In addition, considering that REH hostel is closer to MGM Hospital, as well as SR block, it can be a better option for the isolation block, the house surgeons mentioned.
Asking the college management to seek a remedy for the problem, the intern doctors stated, "There are only four months left for our internship. We would like to stay in the present hostel building without any disruption till we complete our internship."
