Kolkata Medical College committee finds two 2nd-year Orthopaedic medicos guilty of ragging juniors

Kolkata: In a recent development on the ragging incident that surfaced from the Kolkata Medical College, an internal committee of the institute has submitted its report holding two senior post-graduate trainees (PGTs) guilty of involvement in ragging of their juniors.

Both these PGTs found guilty in the case are attached to the orthopaedic department of the medical college, sources aware of the development informed IANS.

Both of them are in the second year and some students in the first year were victims of their ragging menace.

Sources said that the disciplinary action will be taken against them as per recommendations of the National Medical Commission in such matters.

Early this month, Medical Dialogues reported that two junior postgraduate trainees complained of physical assault by these two senior PGTs.

One of the two victims even alleged that he had been subjected to immense physical and psychological ragging for the last four months as a result of which he even had to consult a psychologist.

It had been claimed by the concerned junior doctors belonging to Unit 1 of the Orthopaedic Department that they had been facing physical and mental harassment by their seniors from the same unit for about 4 months ever since they joined the Unit. They further alleged that they also had to face verbal harassment in front of the patients.

They also claimed that as a consequences of the assault by the seniors, one of them fell unconscious on one occasion. Both of the junior doctors then claimed that they were currently under psychiatric consultation. Meanwhile, the officials of MCH have also confirmed receiving the complaint.

However, the seniors, accused of ragging, had  denied the charges. On the other hand, the seniors further alleged that some of the juniors were making the college atmosphere unfit fir studies.

Meanwhile, the Resident Doctors' Association of the Institute had then extended their support to the junior doctors who alleged been ragged by their seniors. Issuing a statement in this regard on 09.01.2024, the association mentioned, "We, the post graduate trainees of Medical College, Kolkata, would like to draw the attention of all the interns, postgraduate students and administration of Medical College, Kolkata towards a very unexpected incident that happened within last few months in our own college premises."
