Medicos forced out of residence as Kakatiya Medical College Hostels turn into COVID-19 ward

Hyderabad: Trouble has mounted for house surgeons and interns at the Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) after the management decided to turn their hostel into an isolation ward for COVID-19 patients.

The decision has been made concerning one of the hostel buildings whose medicos were asked to vacate and informed that electricity and water supply would be cut on January 17. With the move around 83 house surgeons have become shelterless

After the surgeons and interns of KMC urged the Superintendent and the District Collector through a letter to reverse the decision, the college administration allotted 83 surgeons a new accommodation with only 16 rooms outside the campus.

"The rooms are very small, poorly ventilated, and in an unhygienic condition. How are we supposed to cope and adjust to the new accommodation amidst hectic duties," they questioned, speaking to the media persons here.

The surgeons and interns are now forced to leave the hostel as the college management discontinued the electricity and water supply.

One of the affected interns said "Our ex-interns used to stay outside the hostel. But the pandemic has forced us to seek accommodation here, as people were reluctant to rent their houses to us. We have been staying at the KMC women's hostel by paying Rs 5,000 per month, for one year. Initially, we were not provided food, which had left us eating outside for the first two months,"

"Just imagine, after giving our best for the service of patients in a 36-hour work shift, we reach our hostel to find electricity and water connections discontinued. A shelter to stay in and basic amenities is what we ask for, not luxury," she told to The New Indian Express.

After providing endless help to the citizens of the state, the frontline warriors are now facing challenges for their safety. The interns of KMC were tested positive for COVID-19.
