Nashik: The Maharashtra Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (MPGIMER) has taken a decision to turn the hospital into a centre of excellence in trauma care along with revamping the OPD and the casualty management system. They would be running the courses initially from the civil hospital.

A memorandum was signed by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) with the civil hospital for use of the latter's infrastructure to run the postgraduate institute of medical education and research as per the norms of the National Medical Council. As per a media report in the Times of India, the faculty of the MPGIMER would be integrated with the staff of the civil hospital to deliver healthcare to the patients and education to the students.

Major General (Dr) Sushil Kumar Jha (retd), the dean of MPGIMER confirmed to TOI that the civil hospital will be transformed into a centre for excellence in trauma care and will provide the facility free of cost. The MoU was signed between the MPGIMER dean (on behalf of MUHS) and Dr Ashok Thorat, the civil surgeon, in the presence of MUHS Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen (Dr) Madhuri Kanitkar (retd).

Stating that this would be the biggest advantage for the civil hospital, Dr. Jha said, "Nashik has a significant number of highways and even a railway network. All our faculty members are keen to develop the civil hospital as a centre of excellence in trauma care. Facilities will be available for each citizen free of cost."

Further, the officer added that MGPIMER would focus upon two other aspects which include changing the OPD system and revamping the system of casualty management by integrating the emergency medicine department.

The dean told TOI, "We want to change the image people have about government hospitals. Our OPD will have a good area for patients to wait for their turn. They will be able to go through electronically displayed messages about the department and have access to clean drinking water. There will also be a token system,"
