New GMC to Come Up in Wayanad Soon

Wayanad: It comes as welcome news to medical aspirants residing in and around Wayanad as the government is soon going to establish a new government medical college in Wayanad.

At present, there is one private medical college in Wayanad, namely the DM WIMS Medical College. The establishment of a new government medical college will be a boon for the local population as it will allow them easier and cheaper access to healthcare facilities.

Health Minister Veena George spoke to media persons from The Hindu on Saturday, 20th October 2021, after a review meeting on the proposed construction of the new medical college and declared that all healthcare facilities would be set up at the medical college, which is temporarily functioning from the district hospital.

The construction will be completed on 50 acres at Boys Town in the district in a time-bound manner, the Minister said. The Government had earmarked ₹300 crore in its last budget. The contracting agency had submitted a ₹630-crore estimate for the project, she added.

The Government has sought financial assistance from the Centre for the project. As many as 146 posts were sanctioned for the medical college, of which 41 posts of doctors were filled, Ms. George said.

At present, there is one private medical college in Wayanad, namely the DM WIMS Medical College. The establishment of a new government medical college will be a boon for the local population as it will allow them easier and cheaper access to healthcare facilities.

It will also be very beneficial to the medical aspirants living in and around Wayanad, as they will be able to seek admission in the new government institute.
