Speaking to UNI, Health Minister Veena George said the nod was accorded after the institutions fulfilled NMC requirements on infrastructure and academic facilities. “Steps will be taken to admit students in the current academic year itself,” she added.
Both colleges are being developed in a phased manner on par with other government institutions, with large-scale infrastructure and academic facilities already in place to launch MBBS courses.
At the Wayanad Government Medical College, a multipurpose block was constructed at a cost of Rs 45 crore, alongside the establishment of a 60-seat Nursing College. A total of 140 positions, including 115 teaching staff and 25 non-teaching staff, have been created and filled.
The college is equipped with several advanced facilities, such as a modern mortuary complex (Rs 2.30 crore), a Cath Lab (Rs 8.23 crore) for angioplasty procedures, a Skill Lab (Rs 70 lakh), a Paediatric ICU, and a sickle-cell unit—the first of its kind in the state. Additionally, the LaQshya scheme has enabled labour room standardization, and services like joint replacement and advanced dental care have been introduced, reports UNI

An Rs 8 crore allocation has been made for a dedicated water supply system, while hostel construction, valued at Rs 29 crore, is nearing completion.
Specialty services including Neurology and Nephrology, the first in the district, have already been launched. A 60-seat Nursing College has begun functioning, and as many as 273 posts have been created and filled.
Outpatient services in General Medicine, Paediatrics, Pathology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, ENT, Respiratory Medicine, Community Medicine, OMFS, Neurology and Nephrology are operational. E-Sanjeevani telemedicine has been rolled out, Radiology services have secured AERB approval, and a Principal has been appointed, adds UNI
