Navi Mumbai: Bringing good news to the PG medical aspirants in the State, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted its permission to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to start a Postgraduate Institute of Medical Science (PGIMS).

After getting the NMC nod, NMMC now plans to start these courses this academic year as the required infrastructure is already available at the public hospitals located at Vashi and Nerul.

In the first phase, the proposed institute will offer medical education in medicine (3 seats), orthopaedic (2 seats), gynaecology (8 seats) and paediatric (4 seats). The institute is awaiting a nod for a surgery branch as well.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that back in 2022, the Union Health Ministry had granted a no-objection certificate (NOC) to NMMC regarding the proposed Postgraduate medical college in Vashi Hospital. For a long time, NMMC had been following up with the State and Central Governments to get permission to start the institute. Now, NMC has granted its permission to the civic body.

Commenting on the matter, the Municipal Commissioner, Kailas Shinde told Hindustan Times, "The sanction will boost the health services in the city as we will be able to provide quality and super speciality medical services at our hospitals through the doctors who will join the postgraduate studies,"

Shinde also shared the details of the NMMC's plans and mentioned that the basic infrastructure necessary to start the PG courses at Vashi and Nerul public hospitals had been ready since last year.

"We have also recruited the dean, principal, vice-principal and the requisite faculty and staff for the institute. To enrol students, we approached the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, from whom we have already received consent for affiliation in 2022 to start PG degree courses MD and MS. We will start our PG courses around November," he added.

Pointing out that now the qualified MBBS graduates will come to PGIMS to pursue higher studies, Shinde further added, "We will use their expertise in our civic hospitals and provide better patient care and management. We plan to provide super speciality services of medical intensive care, paediatric intensive care, emergency and trauma services."
