Nagpur: The administration of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur has not paid any stipend to their MBBS Intern doctors for the last three months.

As a result, despite working the shifts for 12 hours at a time, around 50 MBBS interns, who are also from the first batch of MBBS interns at the Mihan campus of the institute, are not being paid any stipend.

While the students are alleging that the absence of any permanent institutional head is contributing to their problems, the administration of AIIMS Nagpur has informed TOI that the non-availability of funds is the actual reason why the MBBS students are not getting paid.

Meanwhile, the intern doctors have complained that while they are not being paid any stipend, all the other employees of the institute are being paid their salaries.

Currently, the central institute is being headed by Acting Executive Director Dr MH Rao, who also holds the post of executive director of AIIMS Madurai. Dr. Rao was given the charge of AIIMS Nagpur after the retirement of the regular director Dr Vibha Dutta last month. It has been alleged that after taking charge, Dr. Rao did not remain at Nagpur campus for more than three days.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, in this situation, the MBBS interns at the institute have alleged that despite working for more than the prescribed time limit, they have not been their stipend. They alleged that when other medical colleges follow the 8 hours per shift rule, at AIIMS Nagpur, they have to work for more than that.

Commenting on this, the students told TOI, “We are working in 12 hour shifts. Sometimes, the department in-charge assigns morning shift immediately after a night shift. This makes it a 24-hour non-stop shift.”

“We don’t get food at odd hours when our shift ends. The hospital must make some provision for our food at night hours beside ensuring we are paid on time,” they added.
