Bhubaneswar: Renaming the two existing medical colleges in the state, The Odisha government has decided to adopt the name of Government Medical College Keonjhar as Dharanidhar Medical College and Hospital Keonjhar and Government Medical College Sundargarh as Government Medical College and Hospital Sundargar respectively.

In honour of freedom fighter Dharanidhar Nayak from Keonjhar, the state government renamed the Keonjhar Medical College as Dharanidhar Medical College and Hospital Keonjhar. The foundation stone of the college was laid by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha Sj Naveen Pattnaik on 02 Nov 2016.

This Medical college was built with an aim to improve the doctor-population ratio by utilising the District Head Quarter Hospital, Keonjhar as the teaching hospital. The College campus spreads over a sprawling area of 44.40 Acres.

The Government medical college and hospital Sundargarh is located at is built in the hilly terrains of the quaint, picturesque village of Sankara and covers 21 acres of campus. It was initiated to provide optimum health facilities to improve the doctor-population ratio to the population of the district which is mostly tribal.

The foundation stone was laid by Honourable Chief Minister Sri Naveen Patnaik on 22.01.2014. The college and hospital building was completed within a span of 7 Years and was functional by 25.06.2021. The hospital building was used as a covid facility during the covid-19 pandemic.

In a notification issued by the Odisha Health Department recently, Dr Basanta Kumar Pradhan, Professor, Anesthesiology, MKCG Medical College & Hospital, Berhampur has been appointed as the Dean & Principal of Government Medical College, Kalahandi.

The notification further added that Dr Harikrishna Dalai, Professor, Anesthesiology, SLN Medical College & Hospital has been appointed as Superintendent, Government Medical College & Hospital, Kalahandi, Ommcom news reports.

“Dr Sudhansu Sekhar Mishra, Department of Neurosurgery, SCBMCH Cuttack has been allowed to remain as Superintendent of SCBMCH Cuttack until further orders,” said the health department in a tweet.
