Hyderabad: In a shocking incident reported from Government Medical College in Khammam, a faculty has been booked for allegedly taking an MBBS student to a barber shop and getting his head tonsured. After the incident came to light, the government has ordered an inquiry.

According to recent media reports, the concerned faculty, an assistant professor, in-charge medical officer of the anti-ragging committee has been relieved from his hostel duties and the incident has also been brought to the attention of the Director of Medical Education.

While the officials known to the matter say that this is not a ragging incident, as per the police, a case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), SC/ST, and Ragging Act.

A few days ago, a first-year MBBS student at Khammam Government Medical College sported a “Chinese-style” haircut and came to the college. Initially some seniors in the institute's hostel told the first-year student that this hairstyle was not proper for a medical college student and asked him to get it trimmed. When after the student got his hair trimmed, an assistant professor, in-charge medical officer of the anti-ragging committee, who also stays in the hostel, told him "it was looking odd" and took him to a salon and got his head shaved, the officials informed PTI.

Following the incident, an assistant professor, who is also the Boys’ Hostel Anti-Ragging Committee Officer, got to know about the issue and took the student to a salon and got his head tonsured, reports ANI.

As per the New Indian Express, feeling humiliated, the student lodged a complaint with the college principal, Dr Rajeswara Rao.

The incident that happened on November 12 has sparked criticism with many alleging ragging of the student by the professor, prompting the college officials to relieve the assistant professor from hostel duties and formed a committee to investigate the incident.. The incident has also been brought to the attention of the Director of Medical Education and Telangana Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha ordered an enquiry over the matter and to initiate action against those responsible.

It is not ragging, the officials told PTI on the allegations.

According to the faculty, it was not his intention to do so, but only to discipline the student.

The principal said it was not good on part of the assistant professor to indulge in such an activity. Dr Rao described the incident as “very unfortunate” and said such behaviour from a faculty member was unacceptable. He added that the assistant professor claimed his actions were not intended to humiliate the student but rather to instil discipline.
