Chennai: The Namakkal Government Medical College and Hospital project was inaugurated on Friday by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami. The inauguration was done virtually through video conferencing from Chennai.
The inauguration of Namakkal medical college and Hospital comes as a part of Government's plan to establish 11 new medical colleges in Tamil Nadu. Out of these, six institutes were planned to come up in Tiruppur, the Nilgiris, Ramanathapuram, Namakkal, Dindigul and Virudhunagar at a cost of ₹1,950 crore, and would be attached to existing hospitals in these districts. Each college would have an intake capacity of 150 MBBS seats. The proposal has received the nod from the technical committee of the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) and at least 900 seats will be added to the seat matrix. After the completion of all 11 medical colleges,the state will be able to add 1650 seats in its MBBS pool.
According to officials, the medical college hospital is being constructed at ₹350 crores near the district collectorate, reports the Hindu.
Following the virtual inauguration, District Collector K. Megraj, Dean of the Hospital Shantha Arulmozhi and senior officials from the Public Works Department took part in a related event here and inspected the buildings.
The Centre had given approval for the new medical colleges under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) scheme
Namakkal medical college was recently in news following allegations that a portion of the under-construction building of the upcoming medical college collapsed due to bad quality. However, the state government had denied the allegations saying that the structure was only demolished for rework.
