Bhopal: Instances of ragging have recently come to light in Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, where a junior MBBS student was harassed by senior students.

Already, taking cognisance of the matter, the college authorities have instructed to register a case against three senior students, who are third-year students pursuing the MBBS course.

The matter came to light after a junior student of the college lodged a confidential complaint against the senior students. Approaching the Anti Ragging Cell of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the complainant student had informed about the incidents of ragging that he had to face.

As per the latest media report by IBC 24, after filing the complaint with the Anti Ragging Cell, the college management also got to know about it. Taking note of the issue, the college management immediately called a meeting of the Anti Ragging Committee and talked to the junior student who had filed the complaint.

The daily adds that the junior student had informed the Anti Ragging Committee of the medical college about the names of the concerned senior students who had harassed and ragged him. In support of his claim, the junior student also submitted evidence to the Committee.

It has come to light that a couple of days ago, there was a dispute between the hostel and the day scholar students of the medical college. The case of ragging is also being linked to this.

Taking strict action against the three 3rd year MBBS students, the Anti Ragging Committee has decided to register a police case against them and instructions have been issued in this regard.

This is not the first time that Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal has been linked with the allegations of ragging. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that back in 2018, four second-year MBBS students of the medical college had been suspended for 6 months for alleged verbal abuse and ragging of first-year students on the terrace for more than six hours. Action was taken against the guilty students after a complaint to this effect was lodged with the National Anti-Ragging helpline.

Back in 2021, with an aim of preventing ragging in the medical colleges across India, the National Medical Commission (NMC) had specified the disciplinary actions to be taken while dealing with incidents of ragging.

These provisions had been mentioned in the regulations titled "Prevention and Prohibition of Ragging in Medical Colleges and Institutions Regulations, 2021."

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that these Regulations have specified the definition of ragging and also the actions that may constitute ragging. NMC, the apex medical education regulatory body mentioned the measures to prohibit and prevent ragging by institutions including the duties and responsibilities of the institutes, measures required to be taken by the medical colleges, issue of migration, transfer or conduct certificates, measures to encourage healthy interaction between freshers and seniors, sensitisation of institutional employees and staff towards ragging, Institutional committees and related measures, Anti-ragging squad, Student Affairs or Hostel Committee, duties of the universities, etc.

The Regulations clearly stated that "It shall be mandatory for all concerned to report every incident of ragging" and not reporting it even by a fresher "shall be viewed seriously and may amount to abetment of ragging".
