Tamil Nadu: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami recently laid the foundation of a new medical college in Arilyur ensuring the addition of 150 MBBS seats in the total intake of UG medical seats. The college will be established within 27 acres of land in Ariyalur South village.

The whole project of constructing a new medical college will be costing 347 Crore. The medical college and hospital at Ariyalur in central Tamil Nadu will be granted 195 crore rupees from the Union Government and State will contribute Rs 130 crore for the construction of the college. 

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Tamil Nadu government had obtained sanction from the Centre to set up 11 new medical colleges which included those in the eight districts where foundation stone has been laid and Kallakurichi. The Nilgiris and Ariyalur are the two other districts for which permission was accorded by the Union government.

The Tamil Nadu government has already started construction for Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Tirupur, Namakkal, Nagappattinam, Krishnagiri, and Tiruvallur medical colleges.

The CM had recently laid the foundation of a medical college in Kallakurichi district as well.

In the first phase, the Tamil Nadu government has released Rs 110 crore and the Central government Rs 50 crore. While the medical college buildings will cost Rs 102.55 crore, hospital buildings will come up at a cost of Rs 122.25 crore. Residential quarters and hostels will come up at a cost of Rs 119.2 crore, reports TNIE.

CM inaugurated the construction of the new medical college via video conferencing and the meeting was attended by personalities like Health Minister C Vijayabaskar, principal secretary for public health department J Radhakrishnan, and Chief Secretary K Shanmugam, and some of the other officials participated.
