Uttarakhand: HC orders probe into Haldwani medical college ragging incident

Nainital: Following a shocking video showing the alleged ragging of 27 MBBS students at a Government Medical College in Haldwani, the Uttarakhand high court in response formed a two-member committee on Wednesday to probe the matter and asked for the report within 2 weeks.

The Two-member of the committee is Nilesh Anand Bharne, Deputy Inspector General of Police, and Deepak Rawat, Kumaon commissioner.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about the incident after a suspected ragging video, sharing students with tonsured heads walking in the queue with hands behind their backs shocked the social media. The authorities earlier order a probe into the incident.

In addition, a division bench of acting chief justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra and justice RC Khulbe handed down an order directing the police to complete the inquiry within two weeks and register it as a criminal case. They concluded that the next hearing in the case will take place on March 23.

As per a recent media report in TOI, a petition filed by Sachidanand Dabral of Haridwar, made the Centre, National Medical Commission, University Grants Commission, Sushila Tiwari Government Medical College, Uttarakhand government, the SSP and DM of Nainital respondents in the case.

According to Dabral, the brutal, barbaric Taliban-type ragging will have a far-reaching effect not only on the minds of the students but also on their hearts and souls. The students who were subjected to ragging might take drastic steps as the college management lets off the perpetrators.

When questioned about the ragging, the students were not able to comment but later they told the anti-ragging cell of the college that "their heads were tonsured because of 'dandruff, skin allergy, and psoriasis' and not because they were pressured by seniors to do it."

It was claimed by the college management that they have not received any complaints of ragging and that the institution has no history of such incidents.

The college had been under the spotlight previously for complaints of juniors getting beaten up by seniors, students breaking bottles on each other's heads, students' faces bearing cigarette burn marks.
