With NMC Relief, 5 Medical Colleges in Bihar now allowed to admit students
Patna: The decision of the National Medical Commission (NMC) granting one-year recognition to all the medical colleges with pending approval has resulted in a major relief for the medical aspirants in Bihar.
In the State, five medical colleges including four private and one government medical institute were awaiting recognition from the Apex medical education regulatory body.
With the NMC relief for fresh admission of students in the academic year 2023-2024, medical aspirants can now get admitted to these five medical colleges having more than 600 MBBS seats.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that providing major relief, NMC granted permission to medical colleges/institutes with pending NMC recognition to admit a fresh batch of MBBS students with the same intake as in the academic year 2022-2023.
The Apex medical education regulatory body NMC took this decision as it took note of the schedule of the counselling of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2023 examination.

Issuing a public notice last week, the President of the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of NMC stated, "Considering the schedule for counseling of NEET-UG 2023, Medical Colleges/Institutions that were due for Recognition/CoR due upto the year 2023 and have not been communicated for specific denial or stoppage of admission for the academic year 2023-24 by MARB/NMC, are hereby granted Recognition for a period of ONE YEAR ONLY(i.e. AY 2022-23), for all the admitted MBBS batches upto the academic year 2018-19."
NMC allowed such medical colleges to admit new students in the MBBS course and further mentioned in the notice, "These medical colleges/institutions are allowed to admit fresh batch of MBBS students with the same intake as in the academic year 2022-23."
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, due to the NMC relief, the medical aspirants in Bihar will be able to avail more than 600 MBBS seats belonging to five medical institutes across the State.
Welcoming the NMC decision, the Director at Jageshwari Memorial Medical College and Hospital and the former dean of Aryabhatta Knowledge University, Dr Rajiv Ranjan Prasad told the daily, "Had the recognition not been granted, the number of MBBS seats in the state would have also decreased. Several colleges in Bihar have been granted permission to take admission."
Explaining that the new medical colleges need permission which is granted after inspection on a yearly basis before admission, he mentioned, "Those medical colleges where at least one batch has not passed out after five years of MBBS course are put in the category of new medical college. In Bihar, at least four private and one government medical colleges were awaiting recognition."
