Pondicherry to get its own State Medical University

Puducherry:  Chief Minister N Rangaswamy on Monday said a state medical university would soon be set up in the Union Territory. Speaking at the first convocation of the Pondicherry Technological University (PTU), he said the Pondicherry Engineering College (PEC) was upgraded into a technological university and it is the first state university in the UT.

Even officers in New Delhi used to inquire about PEC, Rangaswamy said they used to say that it is one of the best colleges in Asia. PTU should keep up this fame, he said.

The Chief Minister said the students will get respect only if the college earn reputation and they only will be selected by private institutions. As many as 120 of the 200 professors working in PTU had obtained their doctorate.

About 90 posts of professors are vacant here, he said and added that this will be filled up soon. Lt.Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan participated as the Chief Guest and distributed degrees to the students along with PTU Vice-chancellor S Mohan. Puducherry Education Minister A Namassivayam, Assembly Speaker R Selvam and others participated in the Convocation.
