NEET PG Counselling MUST be held Online- NMC warns against PGMER Violation

New Delhi: Clarifying that all rounds of counselling for admission to all postgraduate medical seats will be held online mode only by the State or Central counseling authority, the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has warned to take action for any violations.

Issuing a Press Release, the Apex Medical Commission clarified that any student admitted in contravention of these Regulations will be discharged from the course, and double the number of seats shall be reduced for one or more years.

These rules have been specified in the Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER) 2023. NMC highlighted the salient features of PGMER 2023 in its recent press release.

"National Medical Commission has notified the “Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023” (PGMER-2023) on 29 th December, 2023. Chapter IV of PGMER-2023 deals with admission, counseling, etc. for PG medical courses," the Commission mentioned in the release.

Salient features of the PGMER 2023, which have been highlighted in the release, are as follows:

  • Admission to the PG Courses shall be through counseling by the Government agency based on the merit list of the NEET PG exam.
  • All rounds of counseling for all seats will be held on online mode by state or central Government counseling authority and no medical college/ institution will admit any candidate themselves.
  • Any student admitted in contravention of these Regulations will be discharged from the course and double the number of seats shall be reduced for one or more years.
  • All the permitted PG seats in a medical college/ institute are to be considered as recognized seats for the purpose of registration of additional qualifications

The Commission further mentioned that the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has published the schedule of NEET PG counselling for the academic year 2024 to be conducted by MCC, DGHS and State PG Counselling agencies in their respective State.

"All the stakeholders are requested to go through the PGMER-2023 and also through the number of PG seats available to each medical college/ institute on NMC’s website before taking admissions to the PG courses," it added.

Referring to the press release issued by the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB), the NMC Secretary issued a public notice on 08.11.2024 and mentioned, "Reference is cited to Press Release dated 08-11-2024 issued by the Post Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) regarding Counseling for NEET PG-2024, copy of which is enclosed herewith. All concerned stakeholders are requested to kindly take note of the same."
