NMC gives permission for 100 MBBS seats at GMC Sundargarh
Bhubaneswar: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Odisha, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its permission for 100 MBBS seats at the newly constructed Government Medical College in Sundargarh district of the State.
Confirming about the Apex medical body's nod for the GMC, the District Collector Parag Gavali told PTI on Friday that the medical college under the Sambalpur University will now be ready to admit its first batch of students from the current academic session, fulfilling the state government's vision of promoting medical education in the tribal-dominated district.
"Health sector in Sundargarh will get a major boost with the starting of this medical college," Gavali said in a statement.
In the letter to the dean, the NMC made it mandatory to develop a biometric attendance and a website to display all the information of the college, courses offered, faculty available and students joined.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that NMC had recently issued a conditional Letter of Intent (LOI) to the Sundargarh GMC for 100 MBBS seats.
Issuing the LOI, the Apex medical body NMC had asked the Dean and Principal of the institute for submitting an undertaking with an assurance that all infrastructural facilities would be provided to the students in terms of teaching and non-teaching staff, building, equipment, and hospital as per the NMC norms.

Besides, the college authorities had been directed for submitting another undertaking for providing funds in their budget till their facilities get developed completely as per the time-bound programme indicated by them.
Earlier this year, Additional Director of Medical Education and Training (DMET) of the State, Dr Umakanta Satpathy had mentioned that five new medical colleges would come up in Odisha within 2025.
It had been proposed that these new medical colleges would be constituted at Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Bhawanipatna, Jajpur and Phulbani.
Finally, NMC has given its permission for 100 MBBS seats at GMC Sundargarh. Spread over 21 acres, the six-storey 500-bed super speciality hospital is equipped with advanced classrooms and laboratories in various departments for imparting quality teaching and conducting practicals.
It has an adequate number of ICU beds, advanced diagnostic labs, modern operation theatres and its own oxygen plant. The hospital promotes use of unconventional energy with its roof-top solar panel set up. The hostels can accommodate 480 male and female students.
As per the latest media report by the Financial Express, NMC has made it mandatory for the newly approved medical college to set up a biometric attendance system. Besides, the college website needs to display all the information regarding the institute, courses offered, available faculty and the students that have joined.
