New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the updated phase-wise academic calendar and curriculum for the MBBS batch going to be admitted this year 2022-2023. 

This updated calendar lays out the entire MBBS course plan for students this year specifying the details including phase-wise curriculum and hours allocated for learning, clinical postings schedule, electives to choose from as well as key changes from Graduate Medical Education 2019 (GMER 2019).

According to this calendar, the total time for teaching and learning to acquire the MBBS degree will be 6864 hours over 176 weeks and clinical postings will take 132 weeks. In the earlier schedule, the total duration for the MBBS course was slated to be 66 months.

The first and second-year MBBS batches last for 13 months each.

During the first 13 months - starting from November 15, 2022, to December 15, 2023, the MBBS students will be taught Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry subjects along with early clinical exposure and community medicine + Family Adoption Programme. The Attitude, Ethics & Communication Module (AETCOM) module will also be taught to the students.

The time available for Phase 1 medicos is approximately 42 weeks (excluding 15 weeks), in which the preliminary/ university exam and results will take almost 10 weeks, vacations will be for three weeks in total and public holidays will be for two weeks. In total, 1638 hours will be available for teaching and learning in the first phase of MBBS. Phase 1 includes hours for the Foundation course, Sports & ECA + FA and Term examinations.

For the next 13 months, i.e., from December 16, 2023, to January 15, 2025, the students will study Pathology, Microbiology and Pharmacology along with forensic medicine and toxicology. 2nd-year medicos will also be taught in community medicine + Family Adoption Programm, AETCOM and Pandemic modules. Surplus hours can be given to FAP/second-year subjects needing more teaching hours, Skill lab training/ artificial intelligence and information technology in pre-clinical and para¬clinical subjects.

Phase two of MBBS will go on for 1638 hours (39 weeks) and the time allotted is 13 months (approx. 57 weeks) and the time available is 42 weeks excluding exam days, vacation and public holidays.

Phase three of MBBS will be conducted from January 16, 2025, till November 30, 2025. The time allotted is 10.5 months (approx. 46 weeks) and the time available is 35 weeks (excluding 11 weeks, in which 6 weeks are for prelims/university exams, three for vacation and two for public holidays).

In the third year, the subjects of General Surgery, General Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, ENT, Ophthalmology, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology and Community Medicine+FAP will be taught to the medicos. Electives will begin and AETCOM as well as Pandemic module learning will continue for students.

Phase 4 will be the longest, as it would be of 17.5 months. During this period starting from st December 2025 to 15th May 2027, the candidates continue the subjects of General Surgery, General Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, ENT, and Ophthalmology. New subjects will include Dermatology, Psychiatry, Respiratory Medicine, Anesthesiology and Radiodiagnosis and Radiotherapy.

The time allotted is 17.5 months (approx. 78 weeks) and the time available is 57 weeks excluding 21 weeks of exam days, vacation and public holidays.

Clinical Postings:

As per the schedule, Phase 2, 3 and 4 medicos will get 39, 40 and 53 weeks of clinical postings respectively.

Electives:

The electives are divided into 2 blocks. Block 1 of 15 days will be offered to 3rd-year medicos in the subjects of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Blood Banking, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Forensic Medicine and Toxicology.

Block 2 of 15 days will be offered in Phase 4 in the subjects of General medicine, General Surgery and allied courses.

Changes in GMER 2019:

The NMC notification points out some key changes from the Graduate Medical Education 2019 (GMER 2019) as per which now Theory sessions of Dermatology, Radiology, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology and Respiratory Medicine have been shifted to the final phase of the MBBS course. Whereas theory sessions of Otorhinolaryngology and Ophthalmology have now been reduced and the remaining sessions shifted to the final phase.

Clinical posting of Otorhinolaryngology, as well as Ophthalmology from Phase II of the MBBS course, has been shifted to Phase-Ill part I and part II.

This year's curriculum brings newer elements of learning including the Pandemic Module, and Family Adoption Programme in Community Medicine included.

There will be no postings during electives.

Clinical Postings have been re-scheduled to facilitate learning and help students cope up with the introduction of a common National Exit Test, NExT, which the National Medical Commission (NMC) is planning to hold in December 2023 replacing the current PG medical admissions gateway, NEET PG.

There will be no supplementary batches. Supplementary exams to be conducted by the end of one (1) month of results of regular exams. Results be declared within a fortnight of the end of the last exam.

According to the NMC, these key changes are proposed to ensure ease of rotation of students in the posting and a minimum number of students in each posting as well as provide increased hours and shifting posting to final year in some allied subjects based on feedback by faculty from these departments.

KEY CHANGES FROM GMER 2019:
