Faridkot: In a major relief, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently granted permission to the controversial Chintpurni Medical College for MBBS admission after the college had been shut down by the Central Government around four years ago.
Issuing a notice in this regard, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) has informed that NMC, the apex medical regulatory body in India has given it nod for 150 MBBS seats for the academic year 2021-2022.
The BFUHS notice further adds that taking note of this change, the University authority has mentioned about arranging a special round of Counselling in the State.
"This is for the information of candidates applied for admission under NEET UG 2021 that National Medical Commission, Govt of India vide letter no. NMC/UGR/2020/000049/015529 dated 11.04.2022 has given permission to admit 150 MBBS students for the academic year 2021-22 to Chintpurni Medical College, Pathankot. The Govt. of India, DGHS, New Delhi vide letter no. F.No U12021/06/2021-MEC has extended the last date of admission upto 28.04.2022 for admission to MBBS Course for academic session 2021," the notice dated 25.04.2022 read.
"In this regard, the Special round of State Counseling will be conducted by the University and schedule will be posted on the website shortly," it added.
Medical Dialogues had extensively reported about the controversial shutdown of Chintpurni Medical College after the Board of Governors of erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) had found that the institute was admitting students without the MCI approval ever since its inception in 2011. In addition, the college did not have the necessary infrastructure and did not provide adequate facilities for the purpose of medical studies.
Following this the 2011-12 and 2014-15 batch of students were shifted to other medical colleges in the state on the directions of the Supreme Court after the students sought to transfer to other medical colleges in the state. The top court had also dismissed the plea challenging the Central Government orders and had stated that the college would be entitled to pursue the permission for the academic years 2019- 20 and 2020-21 after the period of the ban.
Recently, the Apex Medical Regulator, NMC granted its permission to the medical college to admit students in 150 MBBS seats on April 11, the same date on which the stray vacancy round for NEET UG counselling was completed by BFUHS. Taking note of the new development, BFUHS has now decided to conduct a special round of State counselling for the newly added MBBS seats.
