NMC nod to MBBS Admission in GMC Kothagudem from this academic year

Kothagudem: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Telangana, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its nod for MBBS admission in the newly constituted Government Medical College in Kothagudem district.

Issuing the Letter of Permission (LoP) for the 150 MBBS seats in the medical college on August 25, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC has permitted the medical college for commencing MBBS admission from this academic year i.e. 2022-2023.

The nod from the Apex Medical body comes on the basis of the assessment report by the MARB board which was reportedly satisfied with the infrastructural facilities including the lecture halls, laboratory, library, hostels, faculty, hostel building, nursing and paramedical staff required by the college as per the NMC norms.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported about the claims that NMC had turned down the proposal of setting up GMC Kothagudem citing gross deficiencies. NMC had allegedly found 88.8% deficiency in faculty and a 69.7% deficiency in resident doctors. Further the college building had been found to be under construction and there were lack of facilities such as lecture theatres, library, laboratories, student hostels and staff quarters.

Such claims and reports had been refuted by the principal of the medical college, Dr. RL Lakshman Rao who had earlier assured that college had addressed all the deficiencies mentioned by the Commission. He had also assured that the college would get the NMC nod at the earliest.

Following this, on August 3, 2022, NMC gave its Letter of Intent for the 150 MBBS seats in the medical college. As per the latest media report by Telangana Today, now the Commission has issued the Letter of Permission for the medical college on August 25 and has permitted it to commence MBBS admission from this academic year i.e. 2022-2023.

The Commission has directed the college authorities to make sure that the first batch of students get admitted against the sanctioned intake capacity in accordance with the NMC Act 2019. Further, the Commission has mentioned that both the physical infrastructure and human resources will have to be maintained along with biometric attendance. Besides, the college website should mention all the details including the courses offered and the number of faculties etc.

Addressing the NMC nod for GMC Kothagudem, Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar has thanked the Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on behalf of the people of the district for fulfilling the long cherished dreams of the people of a medical college in this area. He also thanked Health Minister T Harish Rai and told the daily, that the people of the State were happy with the decision of the Telangana Government for strengthening the medical education in the State. 

He also mentioned about the Chief Minister's determination for providing free education and medical care to every poor person. In this regard he referred to the Government's nod for medical colleges in Khammam and Kothagudem districts and making medical education available within the reach of common man. He pointed out that now the local students would be able to pursue higher education and pursue higher goals.

Meanwhile, speaking to media, the local MLA V Venkateshwar Rao confirmed that the Chief Minister would soon visit the GMC Kothagudem for inauguration of the same.

GMC Kothagudem is one of the eight medical colleges that had earlier been sanctioned by the State Government. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that Minister T Harish Rao recently announced that eight Telangana based medical colleges would begin their admission process by the academic year 2022-2023.

Those eight medical colleges were in Sangareddy, Mahabubabad, Mancherial, Wanaparthy, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Jagtial, Nagarkurnool and Ramagundam.

Among these, already NMC has given its permission for the medical colleges in Jagtial, Naharkurnool, Sangareddy and Wanaparthy. GMC Mancherial is also all set to commence medical education from this year.
