Indore: Eight senior MBBS students of Indore based Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGMMC) have recently been booked for ragging their juniors, forcing them to perform indecent acts.

The FIR was registered after the new students lodged a complaint with the anti-ragging helpline of the UGC, which had informed the dean of the medical college about the complaint and directed him to lodge the FIR.

Following a formal complaint lodged by an employee of the MGM Medical College, a case was registered against unidentified senior students of the institute late on Sunday night, Tehzeeb Qazi, in-charge of the Sanyogitaganj police station told PTI.

He said the FIR (first information report was registered under sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 294 (obscene act), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, the juniors in their complaints had attached the audio recordings of their torture, photographs, along with the location of the flat of the accused senior students, where the obscene ragging activities were conducted. The juniors alleged that they were ordered to go to the flats of the seniors after classes.

For reaching late, they had to do sit-ups and gradually the torture got worse. Among many activities, they were forced to talk about their female classmates in an obscene manner.

They claimed that the seniors used to made them slap each other until the seniors were "satisfied" by the sound and were convinced that the slap was hard enough.

The complaint read as reported by DNA India, "Juniors were also forced to slap each other and were beaten by the seniors when they failed to do so. Mobile phones were also kept away from them in the flats so that nothing could be recorded. Seniors also made comments on the body, figure, and skin colour of girl students of the junior batch. Such activities are traumatising and made them mentally unstable due to which they are getting suicidal thoughts as well."

The complainant claimed that junior MBBS students were even forced to do indecent acts including sex with pillows, and batchmates. They were also made to wear condoms over their legs with their names on them as their 'Medical ID' to enter in the flats where seniors ragged the junior students, reports FPJ

However, the ragging was not restricted to the flats of the senior students only. Due to the seniors, the new students were barred from going to the library or the canteen and they could not use water coolers as well.

The students alleged that some of the professors also supported the ragging in the name of "personality development".

While commenting on the matter, MGM Medical College Dean Dr Sanjay Dixit said an aggrieved student of the institute had complained to the UGC's anti-ragging helpline a few days ago and on getting information about it, a case has been registered with the police.

Dixit said details provided regarding the allegations of ragging have been handed over to the police by the college management for investigation.

"A meeting of the anti-ragging committee was convened immediately on receiving the mail. The committee endorsed an FIR and a letter was sent to the police," he told TOI.

The dean claimed the alleged incident of ragging took place outside the premises of the college and its hostels. "The police have sought details of students who were removed from hostels around a month ago. We will give the information by Wednesday," added Dr Dixit.

Meanwhile, Sanyogitaganj police station in charge Tehzeeb Kazi told the daily, "We have issued a notice under CrPC section 91, seeking details to proceed with the investigation."

"We will identify the accused by recording statements of the victim junior students of the medical college," he said.
