Tamil Nadu tops MBBS seats, Maximum PG medical seats in Karnataka: Check out Health Ministry's breakup

The Ministry has stated that there is a 69% Increase in Medical Colleges from 387 before 2014 to 655 at present. Further, there is a hike of 95% in MBBS seats from 51,348 before 2014 to 1,00,163 as of now and an increase of 110% in PG seats from 31,185 before 2014 to 65,335 currently.

In December last year, the aggregate stood at 96,077 MBBS and 49,790 Postgraduate medical seats. Since then, the Government has increased the number of medical colleges and subsequently increased MBBS as well as the PG medical seats.

As informed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the detailed breakup of MBBS (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) seats in the country as of now is summarised below. All the NEET PG and NEET candidates who are going to appear on 5th March and 7th May respectively can check out the data as follows:

MBBS Seats in India:

Altogether, 1,00,163 MBBS seats are available at present in over 655 medical colleges in the country, as per the MoHFW's official statement.

The top 10 states in the list having the maximum number of MBBS seats are Tamil Nadu with the highest number of 11,275 seats, followed by Karnataka with 10,995 seats, Maharashtra with 10,295 and Uttar Pradesh with 9,203 MBBS seats.

Next comes the state of Telangana with 6,990 seats followed by Gujarat with 6,500 and Andhra Pradesh with 5,585 seats.

PG Medical Seats in India:

As per the Health Ministry’s statement, a total of 65,335 PG medical seats are available at present.

The data attached below shows the maximum number of seats in the state of Karnataka with 6,006 seats followed by Maharashtra with 5,765 and Tamil Nadu with 4,935 seats.

The number drops down to 3,795 in UP, 2,980 in Rajasthan, 2,915 in Delhi, 2,816 in Andhra Pradesh, 2,723 in Telangana, 2,483 in Gujarat and 1,998 in West Bengal.

Furthermore, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar had informed regarding the CSS Scheme and the medical colleges' status in a written reply during the Lok Sabha question hour. She stated, “The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for ‘Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals’ with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no existing Government or private medical college with fund sharing between the Centre and State Governments in the ratio of 90:10 for North Eastern and Special Category States and 60:40 for others. Under the Scheme, 157 Medical colleges have been approved in three phases in the country. The Ministry also provides financial support to existing government medical colleges for Civil Works and procurement of equipment & furniture under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for upgradation of existing State Government/ Central Government Medical Colleges for increasing MBBS (UG) seats and PG seats.”
