Telangana Govt seeks permission to establish 8 New Medical Colleges with 150 MBBS seats each

Director of Medical Education K. Ramesh has stated that the application has been made well before the deadline, which was Sunday, and all the procedures were duly complied with as well, adds The Hindu. These eight new medical colleges would be set up at Ramagundam, Wanaparthy, Nagarkurnool, Mahabubabad, Kothagudem, Jagtial, Mancherial, and Sangareddy.

As per the data provided by MoS Health Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, Telangana has a total number of 34 medical colleges and among them only 11 are Government medical colleges while the rest are private ones. Altogether, the State currently has 5240 MBBS seats in each batch in government and private medical colleges.

Among these, 1790 MBBS seats belong to the Government sector- 1640 seats in nine medical colleges, 100 in ESI Medical College, and 50 in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Bibinagar Campus). On the other hand, the 23 private medical colleges contribute towards 3,450 MBBS seats in the State every year.

Before Telangana as a State was born, it only had five government medical colleges — Osmania, Gandhi, Kakatiya, Nizamabad and Rajiv Institute of Medical Sciences at Adilabad. Later, Mahabubnagar, Siddipet, Nalgonda and Suryapet were added to it.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the State Government sanctioned the establishment of 7 new medical colleges in the state and also approved 7007 posts in various categories for the newly proposed medical colleges in the State.

As per the latest media report by The Hindu, the State Government has appealed before the MCI, now NMC for its nod for the establishment of 8 new Government medical colleges in Telangana. While commenting on the matter, Dr. Reddy told the daily that these new colleges would commence from next year along with super-specialty departments so that patients can get access to clinical services at the attached hospitals straightway.

The Government plans to develop these 8 new medical colleges as full-fledged health care facilities, so that they do not remain limited to mere teaching hospitals. Among the 8000 posts required to operate these medical colleges include posts of doctors, para-medical staff, and other categories and all the colleges will have 60 posts of super specialists in 12 departments, including cardiology, cardio-thoracic, neurology, neurosurgery and gastroenterology.

Dr. Reddy further informed the daily that he expected the medicla regulator teams to visit the colleges by November – December after the completion of the construction work. The daily further adds that the Roads and Buildings Department has already taken up the construction work.
