Telangana PG Medico Dies after Attempting Suicide, Govt announces Rs 10 lakh compensation to kin
Hyderabad: The first-year postgraduate medical student, who had allegedly committed suicide after being harassed by a senior, died in Hyderabad on Sunday night.
She was undergoing treatment at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad after suffering cardiac arrest. Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan had also visited the medico in the hospital.
The Government has also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of the deceased student. Meanwhile, a second-year PG student, Mohammed Ali Saif has been arrested by Police for allegedly harassing the PG medico.
Police have arrested the second year PG student on charges of ragging, abetment to suicide and harassment under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Anti-Ragging Act, adds NDTV.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the concerned junior doctor, who was pursuing PG in Anaesthesiology at KMC Warangal had allegedly attempted suicide on Wednesday by taking some injections.
The PG medico had reportedly been harassed by one of her seniors. According to KMC Superintendent, the student received cardiac arrest and the doctors team performed CPR which revived her. She has been shifted to NIMS, Hyderabad, for better treatment.
Lodging a complaint in this regard, the father of the victim woman had stated that a senior PG doctor had been harassing her for the last few days and that's the reason she took this step.
After undergoing treatment at NIMS, the PG Medico finally succumbed to death. Issuing a bulletin in this regard, NIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Satyanarayana was quoted stating by Telangana Today, “Despite continuous efforts by a multidisciplinary team of specialist doctors, Dr Preethi could not be saved and was declared dead on February 26, 2023, at 9.10 pm.”
As per the latest media report by NDTV, the Police Commissioner Av Ranganath has informed the daily that the WhatsApp chats on the victim' s and the accused's phones indicated ragging. He further said, "Further investigation will be conducted once the toxicology report comes in."
He further informed Telangana Today that they would alter the case from Section 306 read with 108 of the IPC to Section 306 (abetment of suicide). In case, the accused is found guilty under this Section, he would be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to 10 years and he will also have to pay fine.
“However, Section 4(V) of the Prohibition of Ragging Act, Section (1)(r), 3 (2)(va),3 (1)(w) (ii) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act will remain the same,” added the Commissioner of Police.
Meanwhile, it has been alleged by the father of the deceased student that even though they had complained against the senior student to the college and hospital authorities, no action was taken.
Sources informed the daily that the body of the PG medico was taken to her parents' home at Boduppal in Medchal-Malkajgiri after conducting the post-mortem examination at Gandhi Hospital.
The Times of India adds that the last rites of the PG medico were held at Girni Thanda hamlet of Modrai village in Telangana's Jangaon district on Monday.
Protesting against the incident several lambada tribal unions also gathered in front of NIMS, KMC and MGM Hospital at Warangal. Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission and the National Commission for SC/ST have also taken cognisance of the matter.
They have issued notices to the government, superintendent of MGM Hospital, principal and head of department of anaesthesiology, where the deceased medico was studying.
The Health Minister of the State, T Harish Rao has termed the demise of the PG medico as extremely painful and extended his heartfelt condolences to her family.
Panchayat Raj Minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao announced an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the deceased medico on the behalf of the State Government.
In order to ensure that such incidents do not get repeated, he further mentioned that the State was investigating the incident and would initiate stringent action against the accused persons.
Ministers Mohd Mahmood Ali, S Niranjan Reddy, Vemula Prashanth Reddy, Satyavathi Rathod, Gangula Kamalakar, Talasani Srinivas Yadav and others also extended condolences to her family.
