Yogi Govt issues tender for opening six new medical colleges in PPP model

Lucknow: The plan of setting up six new medical colleges in the Public-Private Partnership model is going to a reality soon since the Yogi Adityanath government has now issued tenders for opening these medical colleges in six districts. 

Investors for constituting these medical colleges in the six districts of the State of Uttar Pradesh will be selected through a tender process, adds Daily Pioneer.

In this regard, the Principal Secretary of Medical Education of UP, Alok Kumar has informed that UP was the first state that issued tenders for setting up new medical colleges in PPP model.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Uttar Pradesh Government had announced its decision of opening six new medical colleges in the State on a public-private-partnership (PPP) model.

It was announced that these new medical colleges would come up in six districts of the State including Mahoba, Mainpuri, Bagpat, Hamirpur, Hathras, and Kasganj. Back then the Government had also informed that the investors for these colleges would be decided soon.

Among the total expenditure for these medical colleges, which was slated to be around Rs 1,525 crore, it was announced that the Central Government would give financial support of around Rs 1012 crore. For each ot the medical colleges, the average cost was calculated as Rs 160 crore.

As per the latest media report by Daily Pioneer, now the State has issued tenders for opening these medical colleges in six districts and the Principal Secretary of Medical Education of UP, Alok Kumar has informed that the details of the tender had also been uploaded on the GeN portal.

"Under this, the work has started after selecting the investors to open medical colleges in Maharajganj and Shamli. Treatment is also likely to start in Maharajganj by next year," Kumar added.

He further mentioned that this was a big step to ensure that better and accessible medical services were available for common people since the State Government will be able to save money by accepting the proposal of the Central Government.

These colleges are being constituted under the one-district-one-medical-college initiative of the state government which is funded under the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme of the central government. The scheme is used to provide capital support to PPP projects, making it financially viable.

Medical colleges based on the PPP model have already been planned by the state in 16 districts with the investors in two medical colleges in Sambhal and Maharajganj already finalised. The new press release has revealed that new medical colleges would be set up in six more districts. The investor would get the district hospital and land for the medical colleges on a 33-year lease. The government is planning to set up new medical colleges in Amethi, Oraiyya, Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Chandauli, Gonda, Kaushambi, Kushinagar, Lakhimpur, Pilibhit, Sonbhadra, and Sultanpur under the next phase.
