9 sentenced to 3 years imprisonment for kidnapping, stripping, parading doctor

Rohtak: A Fatehabad local court recently sentenced 9 individuals to three years of imprisonment each for kidnapping, stripping, and parading a private hospital doctor through the city after his arrest for allegedly sexually assaulting a patient in 2017. The doctor was later found guilty and sentenced to 5.5 years in prison in 2021 under Section 376C (sexual intercourse by a person in authority) of the IPC.

The court sentenced the nine individuals after they were found guilty of blackening the doctor's face, physically assaulting him, and parading him through the streets in a public display of outrage. The mob carried out the act in an attempt to punish and defame him for allegedly raping the girl. The attack took place on October 28, 2017, shortly after allegations of sexual assault were made against the doctor by the family of a female patient.

As per HT news report, the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Rajiv convicted local politician Rajendra Chaudhary Kaka, former councillor Subhash Papiya, Baljeet Bitta, Krishan Kumar, Anil Kumar, Prem Sagar, Subhash Royal, Virender, and Raman Kumar for their involvement in the incident. However, one of the accused, Gurmeet Mita, passed away during the course of the trial. The remaining convicts, who are currently out on bail, were each handed a three-year jail term.

The case was brought up in the court after the doctor's wife, also a doctor filed a complaint following the mob attack. As a result, the police registered a case against the accused based on her statement.

Background of the Rape Allegations

The sexual assault case against the doctor was initiated after the mother of the victim alleged that the doctor had raped her daughter. According to her statement, the girl was admitted to the doctor's private hospital in Fatehabad due to a high fever in 2017. The mother claimed that the doctor admitted her daughter and sent her home. 

However, she alleged that the doctor later took the girl to his residence, where he molested and raped her before returning her in the evening. After the girl revealed the incident to her family, they confronted the doctor, and the police subsequently filed rape charges against him.

The incident caused widespread outrage, prompting the mob attack on Dr. Jindal's hospital. The group stormed the premises, vandalized property, dragged him, beat him, stripped him and blackened his face before parading him through the city.
