2 Indian Critical Care Specialists Shine in Top 2% Scientists in Standford University 2024 List

Two critical care specialist earns global recognition

New Delhi: Two renowned critical care specialists from various prestigious health and medical institutes across India have been recognised among the world’s top 2% of scientists in the prestigious database curated by Professor John P.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University, in collaboration with the Elsevier Data Repository. This honour acknowledges their pioneering research, clinical achievements, and consistent impact on the field.

The database of Stanford University for the year 2024 of top-cited scientists provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator (c-score). The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a 2% or above percentile rank in the sub-field.

Here are the details of the Indian Critical Care Specialists included in Stanford University's 2024 list:

Prof Sheila Nainan Myatra

Esteemed Professor of Critical Care Medicine at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, Prof Sheila is the President of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM). She is a teacher for the Intensive Care Medicine programme at HBNI University and Chair of the Intensive & Critical Care Medicine Committee of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA).

She is among the 14 international airway experts on the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) difficult airway guidelines and the PUMA guidelines (Project for the Universal Management of the Airway). She has led the development of the AIDAA difficult airway guidelines and the first guideline for tracheal intubation in ICU. Her research interests include hemodynamic monitoring, airway management and sepsis. She has developed a new test in hemodynamic monitoring, called the “tidal volume challenge” (CCM 2017).

She was awarded the European Airway Management Society (EAMS) Honorary Membership in 2022, FCCM (American College of CCM) and FICCM by ISCCM. She delivered the William C Shoemaker Honorary Lecture at SCCM 2023 in San Francisco, USA. She serves on the editorial board of several journals including Anaesthesia, Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia, Journal of Critical Care, Anaesthesia Critical Care & Pain Medicine, Trends in Anaesthesia and Critical Care, Journal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology, Indian Journal of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (past Editorial Board member). She has several publications to her credit.

Prof Sheila holds a rank of 87,248 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 71,986 when all citations are included. By the end of 2023, her h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 17, with a total of 1,136 citations for the year, also excluding self-citations.

Dr Mohan Gurjar

He is a Professor at the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow. Dr Mohan did his research on the role of biomarkers in predicting contrast-induced acute kidney injury in critically ill patients: a prospective observational study, Renal outcome of acute kidney disease in critically ill patients: a prospective observational study. 

Recipient of Presidential Citation Award at 26th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM), Hyderabad in 2020 and Honorary Fellowship of Indian College of Critical Care Medicine (FICCM) at the convocation ceremony of Indian College of Critical Care Medicine at Pune in 2012.

According to the list, Dr Mohan holds a rank of 1,84,818 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 1,68,215 when all citations are included. By the end of 2023, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 13, with altogether 560 citations for 2023 (excluding self-citations).
