Guwahati: In a continued crackdown against quackery, Cachar police have arrested two more individuals for allegedly posing as doctors and prescribing medicines without a valid medical degree.

Both men were caught red-handed by the police in the last two days, taking the total number of such arrests in the town to 17.

The accused have been identified as 42-year-old Supal Roy from Chotojalenga Part-II, Dholai, and 39-year-old Indrajit Roy from Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal.

According to an NDTV news report, Supal was treating patients at a chamber set up inside his own pharmacy at Rosekandy Tea Estate. Despite having no medical qualification, he regularly examined patients there before being caught and taken into custody by the Dholai Police.

Meanwhile, Indrajit was posing as a visiting doctor at Maa Ayurveda Clinic in Tarapur, where he examined patients under false pretences.

Additional SP (HQ) Subrata Sen told NDTV, “For the last two months, our operation against fake doctors has been ongoing. So far, we have arrested 17 fake doctors from different areas of Cachar. Within the last two days, we arrested two of them.”

He added, “We have opened a special helpline number, 6026903329, for the people of Cachar. If they have any information about fake doctors, they can call and share it.” Sen further said that the operation will continue as the police have information about more fake practitioners in the district.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that the Cachar Police in Silchar had arrested a fake doctor, the alleged leader and prime accused, for allegedly running one of the biggest fake medical degree rackets in the Barak Valley. The accused, Jayanta Prashad Das, is known to many as “Dr JP Das." He has been alleged to have cheated people for years by pretending to be a doctor and issuing fake medical certificates to others.
