Maharashtra: 2 surgeons, 1 Anaesthetist, Nurse booked for allegedly leaving Surgical Mop in abdomen
Thane: Three doctors and a nurse belonging to a Thane-based hospital have been booked for allegedly leaving behind a surgical mop inside the abdomen of a patient, who herself is a doctor, during a caesarian section operation.
Police registered a case of medical negligence against the surgeon, assistant surgeon, anesthetist, and a nurse on the basis of a report issued by the civil surgeon of the Thane district, adds TOI.
All of the four have been booked under section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian penal code at Vartak nagar police station.
While the patient has registered a case against the doctors, the Jupiter Hospital in a statement has claimed that an emergency caesarian section operation had been conducted to save the mother and the baby.
"An emergency caesarean surgery was performed to save the lives of the mother and the baby. Following the birth of the child, the patient had a lot of bleeding. Hence emergency measures were taken to manage the bleeding and prevent a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). As a result of prompt and timely action, the lives of both baby and mother were saved," the Jupiter hospital mentioned in a statement.
The history of the case goes back to May 2020, when the patient, who herself is a doctor based in Satara was admitted in the hospital for a caesarian section operation.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, after the operation, the patient felt severe abdominal pain, for which she approached the surgeon. Although reportedly no corrective measures were taken by the surgeon, meanwhile, a CT scan and other tests revealed that there was a surgical mop (10 x 10cm) and a metallic strip 2 x 1 cm inside the abdomen of the patient.
Speaking to Free Press Journal regarding the issue, the patient said, "I was developing pain in my abdomen for almost 2 months. But they kept neglecting it, claiming post-surgery pain. After I went through sonography to find a mob inside. The doctors saw it had developed pus inside the abdomen and the surgical mob had developed pus inside."
While commenting on the matter, a police officer told the daily, "*** later started with pain in her abdomen and complained about the same. But the doctor neglected the same claiming it to be a post-delivery pain. However, she carried out an operation in Satara to remove a 10 by 10 cm surgical mob. It resulted in infection in her abdomen and developing pus in the abdomen."
