According to police, the medical student had befriended the girl through social media and promised to marry her, and later sexually assaulted her after drugging the child. The girl was later sexually assaulted by three more friends of the accused.

The girl's parents came to know of the crime after she was taken to a doctor for a medical check-up. The doctor who examined the girl informed the parents that she was sexually abused.

They lodged a complaint with the Vadapalani All Women police station who on investigation found that the accused and his friends were behind this assault and took action against them.

The arrested include a medical student, a resident of Kanyakumari, and his friends, who are residents of Virudhunagar district, Kolapakkam, and Nanganallur. The senior police official said that more arrests are likely to take place on the basis of the investigation, reports the Hindu.

The medical dialogues team had last reported a case of sexual harassment allegations by a 27-year-old doctor against two of her colleagues, following which an FIR was filed at the Pratap Nagar police station.
