3 doctors held for consuming alcohol in dry state Bihar
Doctor arrested
Patna: Three doctors have been arrested for allegedly violating the statewide ban on liquor consumption after they were reportedly found consuming alcohol at a party held at a private resort in the dry state of Bihar's capital, Patna. The doctors are currently in custody.
According to the police, the doctors were caught red-handed consuming alcohol and were arrested after a medical examination confirmed intoxication. As per a latest India Today news report, one of the arrested doctors operates a private hospital in Patna.
The arrests followed a late-night police raid at the private resort after receiving a tip-off about a gathering where alcohol was being consumed. Upon entering the premises, officers found the three doctors allegedly drinking at the party, leading to criminal action for violating the government's liquor ban.
Alcohol consumption remains a serious offense in Bihar, where the government has enforced a strict liquor ban since 2016. The sale and consumption of alcoholic liquor for human consumption are prohibited not only in the state of Bihar but also in Gujarat, Mizoram, and Nagaland.
During the raid, the police recovered and seized bottles of alcohol from the resort premises. The arrested doctors belonged to different districts—two from Samastipur and one from Chapra.
India Today reported Janipur police station chief Balbir Singh said, “All three are doctors. They were present at the gathering and were found consuming alcohol. Their medical examination confirmed alcohol consumption. They have been sent to jail.”
Senior Superintendent of Police Avkash Kumar said, " Officers recovered bottles of alcohol from the scene. Police received information about a party at a resort. A raid was conducted, and three individuals were detained. Bottles of alcohol were also seized."
Apart from the doctors, the police also interrogated other attendees, but they were released as no evidence of alcohol consumption was found.
Officers are investigating the role of the resort owner and other individuals involved.
