3rd year female MD Medicine medico attacked by patient kin at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College
Thiruvananthapuram: In another incident of violence against medical professionals, a female 3rd-year PG medico in the General Medicine department at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and Hospital was allegedly brutally thrashed by a patient's husband following a dispute over replacing a cannula for an injection.
According to the latest media report by TOI, the doctor sustained serious facial injuries after the accused bystander, in rage, forcefully pulled off the mask from the doctor's face and slapped her several times. When she attempted to defend herself, he kicked her down.
Following the attack, the doctor filed a complaint against the accused. Based on it, the police registered a case and arrested him under sections of BNS 121 (1) for voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a public servant to deter him/her from discharging duty, 132 for using criminal force against a public servant, 79 for insulting the modesty of a woman by uttering obscene words or through some gestures, 296 (b) for abusing, and 115 (2) for voluntarily causing hurt, sections 3 and 4 of Kerala Healthcare Services Persons and Healthcare Services Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act-2012.

As per a Mathrubhumi news report, the shocking incident happened on Monday night at around 11.30 pm when the husband of a patient who was undergoing treatment at the hospital created a ruckus in the ward, accusing the staff of delaying to replacement of a cannula for an injection.
At the time, the junior doctor, a 3rd-year PG student in General Medicine, was on duty and doing rounds when she heard the bystander shouting and disrupting the atmosphere. When she inquired about it, the accused brutally assaulted her by snatching her mask and slapping her multiple times, reports TOI.
Soon, the security guards came to her rescue and handed over the accused to the police. He was later taken into police custody, presented before the court, and remanded for 14 days of judicial custody.
Following the incident, the patient has been shifted to the MICU. The incident has raised concern among the medical fraternity, who have demanded action against the culprit and raised serious concerns about the lack of security at the hospital, claiming there are neither enough security personnel nor functional CCTV systems to ensure their safety.
Condemning the attack on the doctor, PG doctors at the hospital will hold a demonstration today in protest against the incident.
