Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad rural police on Thursday detained 81 individuals, including doctors, prominent builders, and business professionals across the city, in connection with an illegal liquor and hookah party held at a private villa, officials said.

The party, which was ostensibly organised to mark a couple’s 25th wedding anniversary, reportedly included arrangements for alcohol, hookah, and other prohibited services.

The incident occurred on the night of February 4, when Sanand police conducted a raid close to Goras Seem, where a large private party was underway despite Gujarat’s prohibition laws. The event, held at a private farmhouse, drew participants from affluent and professional backgrounds, including builders, businessmen, and, notably, doctors from Ahmedabad. The police also seized alcohol bottles, hookahs, cars and mobile phones collectively valued at Rs 2.3 crore.

According to Bhaskar English, police first dispersed the gathering and then escorted all attendees to the Sanand police station, where cases were formally registered. The sequence of events raised eyebrows, as the accused were reportedly provided refreshments at the police station late into the night, blurring the line between custody and courtesy.

“Sealed bottles of foreign liquor of different brands (8), half-filled liquor bottles (7), and empty bottles of foreign liquor of different brands (3), 70 glasses, 10 hookahs with rubber pipes, 8 packets of hookah flavors, 33 plastic containers of hookah flavors, 74 mobile phones, 22 cars, were found and seized during the search,” the statement said, adding that the total seizure amounted to Rs 2.91 crore, reports The Indian Express.

The incident has also drawn attention to the steady rise of high-profile liquor and hookah parties in and around Sanand, often hosted at weekend villas and resorts. Despite repeated raids and arrests involving professionals and foreign nationals, questions persist over how large quantities of liquor continue to circulate in a prohibition state, and why suppliers and larger networks remain untouched.

Police identified the host as a Mumbai resident who organised the event to celebrate his brother-in-law's 25th anniversary. The party reportedly featured welcome drinks, alcohol, hookah, and elaborate food arrangements. More than 20 luxury vehicles were seized from the venue, underscoring the scale and exclusivity of the gathering. Among those detained were several doctors, along with builders and high-profile people.
