Bhopal: A 24-year-old assistant professor in the Emergency and Trauma department at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal, who had been undergoing treatment for the past 25 days after allegedly taking an overdose of an anaesthetic injection, passed away on Monday.

The deceased, identified as an Assistant Professor serving in the Emergency and Trauma Centre at AIIMS Bhopal, was found unconscious in her hostel room on December 11 with a weak pulse rate and heartbeat. She was admitted to the institute the same night and has remained on ventilator support since then.

Despite continuous medical efforts by her colleagues, her condition did not improve, and she was declared dead on Monday.

Confirming her death, an AIIMS Bhopal official told IANS that she passed away around 10 a.m. and that her body had been handed over to her family. The official, however, declined to share further details, citing an ongoing police investigation into the incident.

Earlier, AIIMS Bhopal had stated that an MRI scan conducted 72 hours after her admission revealed evidence of brain injury and prolonged oxygen deprivation.

According to her colleagues, she had completed her duty on December 11 and returned home in the evening. Her husband, an orthopaedic specialist, brought her to AIIMS at around 10.30 p.m. after finding her unconscious.

The doctor's husband had earlier told the media that everything was normal at home and that family members were engaged in their routine activities. When he went to check on his wife, he found her unconscious. Given her condition, it was suspected that she had taken an overdose of a sedative. The family, he said, was in shock.

She held an MD degree in General Medicine and also managed several administrative responsibilities at AIIMS Bhopal, including serving as faculty in charge of the Basic Life Support programme and nursing training sessions.

The doctor had completed her MBBS from MLN Medical College, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Her professional interests included diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, palliative care, emergency medicine and emergency care interventions.
