Bhopal: In another incident of violence against a medical professional, a resident doctor pursuing a PG course at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhopal was recently allegedly assaulted by a patient's relative while on duty. The attacker reportedly grabbed the doctor by the neck, tore his clothes, and even tried to hit him in the face.

The alleged verbal and physical assault reportedly began after the doctor informed the patient’s relatives about his medical condition, particularly the chances of his survival. This reportedly enraged the attendants, who then assaulted the on-duty doctor at the institute’s trauma or emergency department.

In response to the attack, the doctor, Azeem Shahbaz, filed a complaint at the police station. Based on it, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under the Madhya Pradesh Protection of Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2008, against the key accused and his associates.

As per a TOI news report, the incident occurred around 1 pm in the emergency ward after a 39-year-old patient, who had sustained injuries in a bike accident, was brought to the hospital in a critical condition by two attendants. After evaluating his condition, the doctors advised that he be admitted for further treatment.

After the patient was admitted, he was placed on a ventilator, having been shifted to AIIMS from another hospital. Observing the critical nature of his condition, the on-duty doctor informed the relatives that the chances of survival were thin. At that time, one of the kin got angry, lost his temper and attacked the doctor with his accomplice.

Due to the swift intervention of the hospital’s security guards and police personnel stationed on the premises, the accused was caught, and the doctor was saved from further harm. He was then handed over to the Bagsewaniya Police Station.

AIIMS’s Dr Ketan Mehra told Free Press Journal, "Even after assault, AIIMS is providing the best treatment to the patient. Measures are being reinforced to ensure safety within the hospital premises. This incident joins a growing number of attacks on medical professionals across the country and has intensified calls for stronger laws and comprehensive security protocols."
