Patna: In an unfortunate incident, a female doctor from Bihar's Banka district of Sirchand Nawada allegedly ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling in her room. Days after her family fixed her marriage with a doctor, she took the extreme step.

It is suspected that the doctor allegedly committed suicide on Monday evening over non-payment of salary for eight months.

A case of suicide has been registered at the police station and they are investigating the case to find the exact cause behind her suicide.

The 30-year-old doctor was posted at an Additional Primary Health Centre (APHC) at Khesar in the Banka district and served for nine months until she decided to take the extreme step. According to her parents, the doctor behaved normally before the incident, so they were unaware of the upcoming unfortunate incident. However, they alleged that she was stressed because of salary issues at her workplace.

It is reported that when the doctor returned home, her parents and brother were not at home. Taking the opportunity, she completed her meal and went straight to her room. Moments later, when her parents and brother returned home, his brother went to her room and found her door to be locked from inside. They broke the door when the doctor did not respond to their knocks and phone calls and found her hanging from the ceiling fan with a piece of cloth. She was then immediately rushed to the Jamui Sadar Hospital, where she was declared brought dead by doctors.

Later, the police were informed of the incident and conducted a preliminary investigation but found no suicide note in her room. Her dead body has been sent for post-mortem by the police.

Even though she was struggling with salary issues at her workplace, she was also upset about her marriage to a doctor in Samastipur being fixed,d according to a police official. However, the reason is not confirmed yet and an investigation is underway.

Surprisingly, the doctor had a history of past suicide attempt. She once tried to commit suicide by slitting her wrists while studying at Narayan Medical College and Hospital at Jamuhar in Rohtas district.

Speaking to The Telegraph, her brother said, “She joined the APHC in Banka in August 2022 but did not get any salary since then. She was feeling low and depressed because of this."

When contacted, Jamui station house officer (SHO) Rajiv Kumar Tiwari said, “We are considering the death of the doctor as a suicide. Further investigations are going on. We have not recovered any suicide note so far.”

The unfortunate incident has gathered attention of the medical fraternity in the state, who expressed that doctors often struggle with mental and physical stress, due to which unfortunate steps are taken by them. They said that the salary issue of doctors is now a matter of corruption in the country.

Commenting on the matter, Indian Medical Association (IMA) Bihar unit action panel convener Dr Ajay Kumar said, “The doctors posted in Banka revealed that her (Rani’s) pay slip was not being readied since she had joined APHC Khesar and was not being paid her salary. She ended her life at her home in such a situation. It is an unfortunate incident which also reveals the professional pressures on the doctors. She first joined the Bihar government service in 2021 and was sent to an interior location in the Banka district. She resigned the same year. She again decided to join the service in 2022 and was posted at APHC Khesar."

Ajay, a former chief of the Bihar Health Services Association, said, “The pressure related to studies, profession, duty and career is making doctors mentally unstable. There is a need for steps to ensure their mental and physical well-being. We also need to check whether the deceased doctor received medical counselling when she attempted suicide while in college."
