Breaking News: Sanjay Roy found guilty of raping, murdering RG kar doctor
Kolkata: Nearly five months after the brutal incident in which a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Sealdah Court in West Bengal today held the main accused, Sanjoy Roy guilty of rape and murder charges.
Roy, who maintained his innocence during the court hearing, could now face the maximum possible sentence of the death penalty or the minimum, which is life imprisonment. The court will pronounce Sanjay Roy's sentence on January 20.
The judgement follows the forensic reports that indicated Roy's involvement in the incident, with his DNA found at the scene and on the deceased doctor's body. Therefore, he was found guilty of rape and murder governed under sections 64, 66 and 103 (1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Additional District Judge, Anirban Das, Sealdah Court as reported by Live Law stated, "The maximum possible sentence for Roy would be the death penalty, while the minimum possible sentence would be life imprisonment."
