Cardiologist Dr Manav Aggarwal conferred the DMA Health Ambassador Award
Tobacco kills over 8 million people every year and destroys our environment, further harming human health, through the cultivation, production, distribution, consumption, and post-consumer waste.
Speaking to Medical Dialogues team, Dr Manav explained, "Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is the biggest killer in the world today and tobacco use is the 2nd leading cause of CVD. Tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure contribute to approximately 17% of all heart disease deaths. Despite the known harms of tobacco use to heart health and to general health, this menace tends to continue, as still people are not able to correlate the link between the heart and tobacco. As Doctors, we should make it a point to create awareness about harmful effects of tobacco to every patient that we come in connection with."
World No Tobacco Day is an annual celebration on May 31, that informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to fight tobacco use, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living. The theme for 2022 is Tobacco: Threat to our environment.
