Chikkamagaluru: A professor from Chikkamagaluru Institute of Medical Sciences has been accused of sexually harassing a student. Based on the medico's statement, the police recently registered an FIR against the professor.

In her complaint, the student alleged that the professor sent her inappropriate messages and pressured her to fulfil his demands, which caused her distress. She claimed that when she refused, the professor denied her attendance, due to which she could not appear for her examinations.

However, the college authorities denied the allegations. They said the alleged incident took place two years ago, and the student never submitted any written complaint to the administration, nor did she approach the Internal Complaints Committee or the POSH Committee.

"The student had a shortage of attendance. She did not file any written complaint against Dr *** nor did she approach the ICC or POSH Committee. The incident she mentions is from two years ago and is personal in nature. She later married a lecturer from the college and came to the campus on October 29 with members of an organisation, asking for permission to write the exam and making allegations against Dr ***. She was told to take the supplementary exam due to low attendance and low marks," the college clarified, reports Deccan Herald

College Dean Dr Harish said, “We have not received any written complaint against Dr ****. The POSH Committee will meet to look into the matter.”

Responding to the allegations, the accused professor said, “My name is being dragged into this because of attendance and marks issues. Students who score less must take supplementary exams. These allegations are false. I also have screenshots that I will submit at the right time.”

After the student approached the police, Chikkamagaluru Rural Police registered an FIR against the professor. Now, the professor has been booked and is under investigation.

Police told Deccan Herald, "He is accused of repeatedly following the woman and causing her distress, and of sending messages to her mobile phone. An FIR has been registered, and an investigation is underway."
