Palakkad District Hospital Doctors Under Investigation for Child’s Hand Amputation
Palakkad: Following the amputation of a 9-year-old girl’s right hand due to alleged medical negligence at the Palakkad District Hospital, the Town South Police have registered a case against the doctors involved.
The case was registered under Section 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to causing grievous hurt by rash or negligent acts.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that in a shocking case of alleged medical negligence at Palakkad District Hospital, the parents of a 9-year-old girl have accused the doctors of improper treatment after she was admitted with a broken bone in her right arm. What began as a simple fracture later led to the amputation at Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH), Kozhikode. Following an inquiry, the state health department has suspended two junior doctors in connection with the incident.
According to the news reports, the girl, a resident of Pallassana, reportedly fell in front of her house on September 24, 2025, fracturing her right arm. She was initially admitted to the Palakkad District Hospital. Her family alleges that doctors overlooked a small coin-sized wound accompanying the fracture. Over the following days, her condition deteriorated, with swelling, discoloration, and a foul odor developing under the plaster.
Concerned, her parents took her to Kozhikode Medical College, where doctors informed them that the hand damage was irreversible and amputation was necessary to save her life. Vinodhini underwent additional surgery to prevent infection.
In response to public outrage, the Kerala Health Department suspended two junior doctors, pending an inquiry under the Kerala Civil Services (CCA) Rules. The hospital, however, maintains that there was no negligence, while the Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) condemned the suspension as an attempt to appease public sentiment.

The family continues to struggle for basic necessities while living in a rented shed with their three children.
