Dermatology medico dies in Andhra hit-and-run, Doctors' bodies demand swift probe

Vijayawada: Following the tragic death of the 28-year-old dermatology medico in a hit-and-run case, doctors' bodies in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have called for a swift and impartial investigation into the incident.

Medical Dialogues recently reported that the first-year dermatology postgraduate medico at GSL Medical College and General Hospital was declared brain-dead after she was allegedly run over by an SUV at a mall in Rajamahendravaram in East Godavari district.

Police have arrested two men in connection with the incident. They were allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol when they hit the two-wheeler carrying the medico, leaving her critically injured, while her companion, a radiology student at the same medical college, sustained minor injuries.

Expressing deep anguish over the incident, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Andhra Pradesh urged the authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation and take strict action against those responsible if the allegations are established. 

The association also called for zero tolerance towards drunk driving and stronger enforcement of road-safety rules. It urged authorities to step up awareness programmes among young people about responsible driving and the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.

IMA Andhra Pradesh president Dr S Balaraju and honorary general secretary Dr Subhas Chandra Bose expressed condolences to the doctor's family and wished her injured colleague a speedy recovery, as per TOI media report. 

Similarly, the Telangana Teaching Government Doctors Association (TTGDA) and the Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association (HRDA), Telangana, also expressed condolences and urged the Andhra Pradesh government to ensure a fair, transparent and time-bound investigation. It called for strict action against the accused and said there should be no delay or outside influence in the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Telangana Junior Doctors' Association (T-JUDA) called for proper arrest and legal action, preservation and examination of CCTV footage, and a fair and time-bound investigation. The doctors' associations have also urged authorities to ensure that the doctor's family receives all necessary legal and emotional support and that the case is taken to its logical conclusion without any compromise.

The associations said that the death of a young doctor was a serious loss to her family and the medical community and stressed that justice should be delivered without delay.
